Student explores beyond the syllabus learning with Minds Underground

STEP 1

Build evidence of wider reading and subject exploration

Entry to the top UK and Russell Group universities is widely acknowledged as highly competitive. Aspiring students must showcase genuine enthusiasm for their chosen subjects and a thirst for knowledge, which necessitates independent exploration beyond the confines of their academic curriculum. Initiating this process sooner rather than later is crucial; a substantial number of successful applicants commence their preparations a minimum of 12-18 months prior to submitting their applications.

At U2, we are dedicated to facilitating this preparatory journey by offering mentoring sessions, research opportunities, accompanied attendance at lectures, discussions, and debates, among other activities. We strongly recommend participation in our "beyond the syllabus" Summer Schools, each led by two mentors from top UK and Russell Group universities in your field of interest.

STEP 2

Decide on which course is right for your needs and career aspirations.

When it comes to crafting a student’s academic journey, questions abound. Is this the right course for me? What impact will it have on my career? How do I distinguish between courses and colleges? These are the queries that naturally arise in the application process.

At U2, our experienced mentors have walked this path themselves, making them your trusted advisers. Additionally, we provide insightful taster days, including guided visits to prestigious institutions, allowing students to shadow a current undergraduate or postgraduate in their field of interest.

Personal Statement Tuition helps student craft a perfect personal statement

STEP 3

Prepare UCAS application and personal statement

The personal statement is a vital element of your UCAS application (deadline is typically mid-October), and is often used as a springboard for discussion at interview if applicable.

U2’s personal statement tutors hold close insight into what admissions professors like to see, and can help students to convey their skills, motivations, and long term goals, utilising material explored in our extra-curricular masterclasses or research projects, or students’ own endeavours. Personal statement sessions can include preliminary planning and content brainstorming, strengthening evidence of further subject exploration e.g. via provision of reading lists, support with opening paragraphs and structure and polishing, reviewing and proof-reading the final piece.

STEP 4

Prepare for admissions tests for specific courses and universities

Several UK universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, use admissions tests to assess applicants' suitability for their programs. These tests evaluate subject knowledge, critical thinking skills, and academic potential. Institutions like Imperial College London, UCL, and LSE may require subject-specific admissions tests like BMAT, UCAT, or LNAT. These tests are crucial for selecting the most promising candidates.

Our experienced mentors prepare students for all aptitude tests, assessing subject knowledge and skills like abstract reasoning, situational judgement, and decision-making. We help students create a plan to prepare for the paper at hand, including test-specific training, tailored mocks, and feedback sessions.

STEP 5

Start mock interview practice

Many UK universities, including Edinburgh, Bristol, and Imperial College London, use interviews to select candidates for competitive courses. These interviews assess suitability and ensure the university admits students with the right skills, knowledge, and potential. They allow applicants to demonstrate passion, critical thinking, and discuss academic interests, giving universities a more holistic view of each candidate.

U2 holds a bank of over 1000 past interview questions, across all subject areas. We encourage attendance to our mock interview days, which are aimed at Oxbridge candidates, but also tailored to those with interviews at Top Russell Group Universities. Students will receive a communication skills workshop, and multiple mock interviews, held by different subject experts / graduates.
